DISCOVERIES THAT HELP UNDERSTAND LIFE IN CORINTH IN THE FIRST CENTURY

Rather than focusing on material archaeological discoveries at Corinth, we will discuss the activities and beliefs of the Corinthians in relation to these discoveries. We will then apply these discoveries into understand texts within the New Testament. New insights have come to 51chapters of the New Testament texts (Acts 18, 19 and 20:2-3 which are set in Corinth). The Book of Romans was also written in Corinth, and I and II Corinthians contain Paul’s responses to what seems to have been five letters with questions and problems written from the Corinthians to Paul while he was in teaching Ephesus for almost three years).

Some of the lecture themes will be:

  • Corinth: geographical cross-roads between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean

  • Sailors, slaves, and the road transferring cargoes between the two ports of Corinth

  • The Temple to the goddess of love on the Acro-Corinth and I Corinth 13

  • Stories about the ancient Apollo Temple and springs, dominating the market place

  • The Jewish community, God-fearers, and believers in Greek mythology in Corinth

  • Life in and around the two theaters in Corinth

·      Paul’s concerns about arrogance in the church and hubris in government officials

  • Corinthian bronze was so famous her bronze was used in the Jerusalem Temple

  • A bi-lingual Roman Colony in Greece and how it affected women in worship

  • Saint Paul, Priscilla and Aquilla and the Corinthian Isthmean Olympic Games
