Towards the end of 1919, a reclusive poet, Sarah Harding, (Jennifer Porter) lives on the crumbling estate of the recently-widowed Dulce Bainbridge (Elisabeth Hardcastle). Dulce’s finances have been drained by the generosity of her late husband, Samuel, who enjoyed lavishing money and housing on artists he found interesting. The once large staff of Stonegate has now been reduced to three: the feisty Irish cook, Mrs. Roswell (Dawn Tucker); the taciturn butler, Grayson (Harlan Baker); and the developmentally challenged young Denby (Gerald Davis), who helps out where he can. When Dulce’s neighbor Edith Wharton surreptitiously gives three of Sarah’s poems to Peter Woodburn (Dana Packard), Senior Editor at The Atlantic Monthly, he becomes consumed by them and comes calling. Events do not unfold the way Mr. Woodburn expects, however, and his presence at Stonegate sets off sparks in all directions, in this wistful period comedy.
