The beloved American comedy takes place at The Cloisters, the kind of place that used to be called a “home” for what used to be called “the mentally ill.” There the wise, witty, wealthy widow Mrs. Savage has been committed by her vain, avaricious stepchildren. The mark of her madness, at least according to them? She has set up a memorial fund to honor her late husband by giving away the family millions to ordinary people pursuing their dreams, however foolish.

In the wounded but gentle misfits who make up her fellow “guests” at The Cloisters, Mrs. Savage finds a new and loving family—and one far more in tune, she learns, with her view of the world. Meanwhile, she leads her stepchildren a merry chase for the family fortune, leading them only to the humiliation they deserve.
