Description

"The Dao gives birth to One. One gives birth to Two. Two give birth to Three. Three gives birth to all things." - Chapter 42 of the Tao Te Chaing

ENTROPY fuses the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism and Daoism, posthumanism theory, and feminist methodologies to explore humanity's trajectories throughout history. By navigating primal life stages, the quest for power, and the dissolution of identity across cultures and time, Entropy challenges fixed notions of humanity, self, gender, and technology. It embodies both ancient traditions and posthuman anxieties, questioning the boundaries of the human form and existence. The project critically engages with the intersection of spirituality, technology, and power, while exploring impermanence, the evolving relationship between humans and non-humans, and the intersectionality of gender and power dynamics.

Emerging Artists II: ENTROPY presents original choreographic and visual work by third-year MFA graduate student Valkyrie Yao. This showcase highlights interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects that weave together stage performance, film and installation, illuminated by philosophical and theoretical research. Over the course of nearly three years, Valkyrie's research has evolved through intensive exploration, focusing on themes such as posthumanism, identity, and the intersection of spirituality, technology and human consciousness. By transforming abstract inquiries from reality into artistic practice, this project challenges traditional boundaries and encourages reflection on humanity's roles within a larger, interconnected existence.

Content transparency: This project includes both performing and visual arts. Performing arts works involve heavy subject matter with dark imagery and adult content. Visual arts works may invite viewer participation. Viewers will be asked to review and acknowledge the content reminder prior to attending.

Please note: Viewers are invited to arrive 30 minutes before the performance starts to experience the visual arts exhibition in the theatre lobby.
