LUCK BE A LADY TONIGHT!
BAYOU CITY THEATRICS KICKS OFF THEIR SUMMER SEASON WITH ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICAL COMEDIES OF ALL TIME- GUYS AND DOLLS!
Houston (July, 2015) - GUYS AND DOLLS hit the Broadway stage in 1950 and was considered "the perfect musical comedy." With timeless music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a clever, seamless book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the musical has seen success since it first opened. GUYS AND DOLLS promises heartfelt and hilarious entertainment in Bayou City Theatrics' upcoming production, which runs July 17 through August 2 at The Kaleidoscope.
Based on two short stories by celebrated American author Damon Runyon, GUYS AND DOLLS won the Tony Award for Best Book and Best Musical. The musical was quickly turned into the popular 1955 film adaptation by the same name, starring Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons, Marlon Brando, and Vivian Blaine. After numerous Broadway revivals and regional productions, GUYS AND DOLLS has become a household name.
In a time when gambling was illegal, Nathan Detroit (Kyle Ezer) searches for a new hideout for his infamous “floating” crap game with his right-hand-men, Nicely Nicely Johnson (Colton Berry), Benny Southstreet (Luke Hamilton), and Rusty Charlie (Laz Estrada). Meanwhile, his hypochondriac fiancée of fourteen years, Miss Adelaide (Blair Wingfield), headlines at The Hot Box, a cheap nightclub. She detests Nathan's lousy lifestyle and refusal to seal the deal on their marriage. Nathan avoids Adelaide's relentless pressure into marriage, while organizing a crap game like no other.
Just around the corner, Sergeant Sarah Brown (Victoria Riley) has made it her personal quest to get the gamblers and sinners of the city to repent. After landing in New York for a short visit, the suave, high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson (Joshua Green) walks into her “Save-A-Soul” Mission. He has placed a bet with Nathan that he could take any “doll” in the city on a date to Havana and will stop at nothing to come out on top. We follow Sky’s pursuit of Sarah and Nathan’s avoidance of Adelaide through the wacky twists and turns of Runyon’s hilarious plot, culminating in a toe-tapping, fast-paced, happy-go-lucky piece of classic musical theatre.
Directed and designed by BCT Artistic Director, Colton Berry, choreographed by Luke Hamilton and music directed by Jane Volke, GUYS AND DOLLS features an infectious score, including beloved hits such as "A Bushel and a Peck," "Luck Be a Lady," and "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat."
